2026 to be National Year of Reading

The first information about the National Year of Reading in 2026 has been announced.

The Government says that reading is central to its Plan for Change, which supports literacy activities in schools, workplaces and in life generally and which boosts well-being, brings people together and expands people’s knowledge about the world.

According to the Government: “In a fast-moving, AI-powered world, the campaign will reimagine what reading means, making it modern, meaningful, and relevant. Reading unlocks potential, boosts wellbeing, builds skills, and brings us together.’

The initiative is backed by organisations ranging from publishers to arts groups.

The Government statement said: “The goal is bold: to inspire thousands of community reading champions, welcome millions of new library members, and help businesses champion reading in their workplaces and communities.

“From online influencers and social platforms to teachers, libraries, and colleges, everyone has a role to play. At the heart of this movement is a dynamic, insight-driven campaign powered by national champions and local communities. Together, we’ll build a culture where reading is for everyone, everywhere.”
