Triggering a reaction in your reader

One of the most important skills that an author must master for a novel to work is the use of triggers to engage readers.

The worst thing a novel can achieve is nothing – for the reader to get to the end and not to be changed in some way, to have not experienced anything. The key to avoiding this is for the author to put themself in the reader’s mind and by doing so trigger a reaction.

So, what might those triggers be? If you go to crime writer John Dean’s latest Handy Hints post at his website here at www.johndeancrimewriter.co.uk you’ll find out – look in the menu for Handy Hints – General.
