I am fortunate in that my books attract mostly good reviews on the likes of Amazon and Goodreads, and every so often a phrase will stand out.
The latest example was from ‘Bootsy’, on Amazon in the United States (I have a growing number of readers in America and very welcome they are, too), who reviewed the Kindle ebook boxset featuring the first nine books in the DCI Jack Harris series published by The Book Folks, a Joffe Books imprint.
Bootsy referred to Harris as ‘one heck of a character’ It’s only five words but comments like that sum up what an author is trying to achieve with their protagonist, namely creating someone memorable, someone who can dominate the story and keep it moving forward with relentless momentum.
And the five star rating that Bootsy gave the boxset made it all the more memorable. Thank you, Bootsy.
If you want to read some more of my thoughts on creating characters, you’ll find them in the Handy Hints – Characters section of my website.
