Crime writing initiative backs literacy campaign

The nation’s crime writers have joined up with the biggest literacy campaign in a generation as they prepare for one of the most eagerly-awaited events in the crime writing calendar.

National Crime Reading Month (NCRM), which runs every June, encourages new readers, avid readers and non-crime readers alike to take a fresh look at the wide range of crime fiction and non-fiction books/short stories and articles which are available.

Run by the Crime Writers Association and its partner Reading Agency, this year’s NCRM is supporting the National Year of Reading, a Department for Education initiative in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust to tackle the decline in reading enjoyment in the UK and reconnect people of all ages with reading as a relevant and immediately rewarding activity, using the slogan ‘Go All In’.

National Crime Reading Month will see authors hold events in venues including libraries, theatres, church halls, bookshops, schools, colleges and online to talk about their books and explain what writing crime means to them. Authors will be getting readers involved with Q&A sessions, book group discussions, running workshops and signing books.

NCRM launches on May 30 May at Criminally Good Books, an independent crime-only bookshop in York.

Events will be added to the NCRM website at http://www.crimereading.com
