The power of characters

‘Writers can create the finest landscapes, devise the greatest plots and produce the most remarkable prose but they cannot make their narrative truly come to life unless they have devised effective characters. It is your characters who tell your stories, who bring your ideas to life, who engage the reader’s imagination, who make them laugh and cry, celebrate triumph and mourn loss. Put simply, a book lacking in well-drawn characters will fail.’

Who said that? Well, me actually, in my recently-published book on creating fiction. On Writing is available in ebook and paperback format on Amazon if you wish to buy the book, with its down-to-earth advice and quirky sense of humour.
