The Society of Authors has issued advice to help authors protect themselves against scammers.

It says that it has have received numerous reports recently of authors being sent scam emails, either pretending to be from the Society of Authors, or from other organisations promising marketing, festivals and much more.

To try to minimise the risk, the organisation is advising authors to remove email addresses from public websites, including their own and the SoA member directory. Instead, people who want to get in touch can use ‘Contact via the SoA’ option or signpost people to their own author website contact form.

The Society says that it will never send emails from gmail accounts or any other email that does not have an official societyofauthors.org domain name.
