As I have mentioned before, I am writing a crime novel featuring new characters.
I needed to do it because, having written thirteen each in the Blizzard and Harris series (The Informer came out recently and Six Steps to Murder comes out next month), I felt the need for a new challenge. It’s not the end of my detectives, just a change.
Writing a new book from scratch involves several key steps and it’s not easy because all the familiar elements on which the author of a series relies have gone so I need to be sure of my new idea, the central theme, which will guide my writing.
I also need new characters and they are coming together slowly, as is the location. All I will say is that it is set amid a spectacular Scottish landscape and is taking a lot of research, so my writing is much slower than with the other books.
Oddly enough, that’s exactly what I wanted, my brain is working hard and the idea is coming together. I am not going to give anything else away at this stage, except to say that I am creating a detective who is very different from Blizzard and Harris – and I very much doubt they would like him!
